DP World may open a new Inland Container Depot in the Kashmir region of India.

Terminal operator DP World is in talks with the Lieutenant Governor for Jammu and Kashmir to set up a new inland port in India’s Jammu and Kashmir or Jammu Kashmir as the place is popularly known. Mr Manoj Sinha, the governor for the region which is under the direct rule of the Indian central government unlike other places which have autonomy said to the Reuters that the deal will be finalised shortly.

The DP World spokesperson also said that the company had a productive meeting with the Lieutenant Governor on 6 January 2022 and revealed that it was preparing a proposal for the project. Kashmir lost its statehood recently and the region was under the Central Government rule. A Muslim majority state which is entangled in the tug o war between India and Pakistan has had poor growth in terms of economy. The inland container depot is a positive move in this regard.

An ICD as it is popularly known here in India enables business houses to get containers for shipping including dry containers and reefer containers which are essential in fruit transportation considering the humungous area under Apple cultivation in the region. Kashmiri apples are in huge demand across the world.

An ICD will help in the imports and exports for the businesses in the region. The business houses engaged in trading of fruits are the prime beneficiaries. They will get better prices for their produces and enables them to ship materials and produces directly to their overseas buyers. Imports will also enable them access to quality products which otherwise are brought in from Delhi. Carpets.
