Michigan-based Ryba Marine Construction Company awarded a contract for dredging the port of Toledo and the Maumee River.
Toledo Port is the busiest port in Great Lakes. Toledo Port Authority works in Partnerships with the Army Corps of Engineers to monitor and manage the dredging of the Port of Toledo. When compared to other U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, the Port of Toledo is closer to many major ports in Europe.
Toledo Harbor is located at the mouth of the Maumee River at the city of Toledo, Ohio. These harbor channels are regularly maintained and dredged to accommodate efficient and safe deep-draft commercial navigation. Toledo Port is a deep-sea commercial port that processes an average of 8,861,080 tonnes of cargo annually from 2015 to 2019. The port’s facilitated waterway transport supports $ 494 million in business revenue, $ 2,157 direct and indirect, induced employment, and $ 163.3 million in labor revenue transport.
This harbor requires approximately 800,000 cubic yards of dredging every year to maintain the navigation channel. The harbor was last dredged in 2021, Hence Maintaining these channels will facilitate continued harbor activities which provides significant economic benefit to the region and commodities handled by this harbor supports in business revenue. Also this dredging process will ensure safe navigation, and an advantage of receiving large vessels. Dredging is essential for the ports to remain in active operation.
This Dredging will be focused in the bay channel and is scheduled to start from early mid-July through mid-December, though the work will be completed faster.
