The title of this article says it all. Cochin, an ancient city on the Arabian shores that was and is a trade hub since the 15th century is also home to the Biggest Shipyard in the country. Lying south of the Indian peninsula, the European, Vasco Da Gama who traced the sea route to India was laid to rest in the soil of Kochi though later his remains were removed and re-interred and laid to rest in Portugal, his home. Kochi is a major maritime destination in India.
Cochin Shipyard Limited is a public sector undertaking with the government of Indian holding major shares in the corporation. The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) was also a government corporation that was later acquired together by four major seaports in the country. Cochin Shipyard is India’s biggest shipyard in the terms of the size of the vessels that are built here. The aircraft carrier which India is making indigenously is also crafted here.
With the Dutch Technological intervention, the Cochin Shipyard is turning a major milestone in its existence by venturing into a dredger construction. Dredging Corporation of India signed a contract with Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Kochi, on 17th March, 2022 for the construction of a 12,000 cubic meter hopper capacity trailer suction hopper dredger (TSHD) for euro 104 million under the ‘Make in India’ program envisaged to create employment in the country and to arrest the outward flow of cash.
Both the firms are listed on the bourses of India and On thursday, shares of DCIL on the BSE closed at ₹326.90, lower by 1.03% from its previous close.
