GAICO Construction and General Services is increasing its dredging capabilities in Guyana by adding another Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge to its fleet which currently includes a Hopper Dredge, Cutter Head Dredge, Hydraulic Cutter Head Dredge, and Backhoe Dredge.

The Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge set sail last week from the RAK Port in the United Arab Emirates for Guyana. This is an additional US$7.5M investment which will increase the dredging capabilities in Guyana and the region, ultimately creating more jobs for Guyanese.

The company, in a press release, said it was investing to build increased capacity in Guyana and is certain to impact the local economy in a positive manner. Small but much needed own dredging company for a small state like the Guyanese will arrest the outward cash flow from the region aiding the development of the local economy.

The release quoted Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GAICO Construction Komal Singh as saying: “this is a momentous occasion for GAICO as it will enable increased capacity and provide us with another opportunity to build local capacity within our team. As we strive to meet the emerging demands of the private sector in Guyana, we remain steadfast to our values and principles of putting people and safety first.”

GAICO is also building a wharf and dry dock facility at Nismes, West Bank Demerara. The completion of the first phase will see a laydown yard, a one-finger-pier and the wharf front at the Nismes foreshore area. This facility will allow materials and equipment to be offloaded from vessels and stored until they are ready for further transport.

GAICO believes since new infrastructural work in Region Three will increase, there will be an increased demand for construction material produced outside of the region.

By allowing ships to moor at the facility, supplies headed to Region Three could be discharged straightaway – reducing transportation costs. Beyond this, however, this facility is strategically positioned to support the oil and gas sector directly – particularly, the forthcoming gas-to-energy project in nearby Wales.

Guyana may not be confused with the French overseas region of French Guiana. Officially the Co‑operative Republic of Guyana is a country on the northern mainland of South America and the capital city is Georgetown. Guyana is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Brazil to the south and southwest, Venezuela to the west, and Suriname to the east. With 215,000 square kilometres (83,000 sq mi), Guyana is the third-smallest sovereign state by area in mainland South America after Uruguay and Suriname and is also the second-least populous sovereign state in South America after Suriname. It has a wide variety of natural habitats and very high biodiversity.
