The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District has announced that more than $6 million in federal infrastructure funds would be used for Murrells Inlet dredging and Garden City beach re-nourishment.
According to a press release, the commercial fishing sector would benefit from the dredging of a federal canal in Murrells Inlet with funds totaling $6.1 million. Garden City Beach’s southern point will then benefit from the material.
Beach renourishment is “doing its job,” according to industry insiders, who argue that “the coast moves.”
By placing beach grade dredged material at Garden City Beach and finishing this project, a win-win situation for the community is created, allowing for safe passage in Murrells Inlet while simultaneously reducing storm damage risk.
In November, President Joe Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which would provide the funding.
