The project is part of Khalifa Port in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi and is scheduled for completion in October 2023.

Abu Dhabi’s flagship company, the National Marine Dredging Company, a leading homegrown dredging company based in the foremost emirate of U.A.E. has won a Dh1.3 billion ($353.9 million) contract from Abu Dhabi Ports Group for the engineering and construction work on the Shamal Development marine project which is part of Khalifa Port, located in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, midway between Mina Zayed and Jebel Ali Port, which was built on a reclaimed artificial island reaching 4.5 kilometres offshore.

Mr Yasser Zaghloul, group chief executive of NMDC said that the contract is part of their strategic plans to expand the company’s operations in the UAE and beyond. As an EPC company and a major marine dredging contractor in the Middle East, the company envisions that the contract will also create significant value through its localised project execution.

The dredging project consists of removal of 16.8 million cubic metres; 1.2 kilometres of quay wall, construction of an approximately 3.8 kilometers detached breakwater and ground improvement works covering a million square metres along with environmental monitoring and protection measures. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2023, officials said.

Mohamed Al Shamisi, managing director and group chief executive of AD Ports Group said that the new development will help them to further augment their infrastructure, operational and cargo handling capabilities, supporting our growth and accelerating trade flows in the region.

AD Ports Group owns and manages 11 ports and terminals in the UAE and Guinea, including Khalifa PortZayed PortMusaffah PortFujairah TerminalsCommunity PortsKamsar Port and Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal. It operates more than 550 square kilometres of industrial zones within Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi and ZonesCorp, the largest integrated trade, logistics and industrial business grouping in the Middle East.

NMDC had early this year completed its merger with the top Emirati engineering and construction group, National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC), thus creating one of the leading integrated oil and gas and marine services EPC players, with an established footprint across Mena and South Asia regions.

The Abu Dhabi marine dredging group had in October reported a significant increase in its net profit for the first nine months of the year which surged to hit AED501 million ($137 million).
